Artichokes are a beautiful vegetable. So delicious and extremely healthy to eat!! I personally use artichokes to cleanse my system naturally, as they hold many antioxidants and restorative features.
Below are the health benefits of artichokes borrowed from www.nutrition-and-you.com/artichoke.html
Health benefits of Artichoke
How to make an artichoke:
First you must make sure to cut off the tips of the artichoke as they have thorns that hurt if they stab you. You will also want to cut the tip of the flower stalk of the artichoke to allow your eating experience to be the very best! This will allow the stem to absorb water and be soft and delectably edible!!
Once the artichokes are prepared, place them in boiling water on top of a colander for steaming. Artichokes take a while to steam and you may need to add more water to keep them going.
Next, squeeze one of our amazing lemons on the artichokes. This will boost the overall flavor and will allow the leaves to stay green and not turn a shade of brown during the steaming!!
As stated, artichokes take a while to steam. Cook for around 25-45 minutes or until the outer leaves can easily be pulled off. Artichokes can also be cooked in a pressure cooker (about 15-20 minutes cooking time). Cooking time depends on how large the artichoke is, the larger, the longer it takes to cook.
Once you have completed the steaming you can enjoy the artichokes just like this!! People then dip their artichokes in either balsamic vinegar, garlic butter (my favorite), or mayo. I recommend the garlic butter but each palate is different and will enjoy other things. NOTE: do not forget to eat the artichoke heart which is located under the "choke" part of the artichoke.
TO STUFF AN ARTICHOKE:
Take already steamed artichokes and add some bread crumbs and Italian cheese and allow artichokes to bake standing up until the bread crumbs harden on the leaves. You can also stuff artichokes before you cook or bake them depending on how you want to!
Later this month I will show various ways of making stuffed artichokes!! It is a Thanksgiving family favorite!! With artichoke season right around the corner, why not take some time to become acquainted with on of the best edible flowers around!!
